Divorce in Israel: how the process works

Marriage and divorce for Jewish couples in Israel are decided by the rabbinical court, while property, custody and support can also be heard in the Family Court.

Where to file

Whoever files first often sets the forum for connected matters — the 'jurisdiction race'. A dispute-resolution request must be filed first.

Property division

The default is an equal balancing of assets accumulated during the marriage, excluding inheritance and gifts.

Children

Custody and support follow the child's best interests; since ruling 919/15 support reflects both parents' means and parenting time.
