Ido Shiponi to Pay Israel Ziv Approximately 140,000 Shekels

How the Dispute Arose

In December 2024, Shiponi responded on X to a post by Ziv stating that he had traveled south together with Yair Golan and retired Major General Noam Tibon to rescue people. According to Ziv, the response included an implication that they knew in advance the time when the attack would begin and also linked him to a person whom Shiponi called a spy.

The Parties' Positions

In January 2025, Ziv, assisted by attorney Tomer Brazik, filed a defamation lawsuit for 328,000 shekels. He argued that the post was false and inflammatory. Shiponi described his response as a legitimate question and the lawsuit as an attempt to silence a critic.

What the Court Ruled

Judge Ronen Peleg ruled that Ziv was entitled to compensation without proof of damages under Section 7A of the Prohibition of Defamation Law. In determining the compensation, the court considered the circumstances of the publication and the criteria for assessing the harm caused.

Additional Payments

In addition to the principal compensation, Shiponi was required to reimburse Ziv approximately 8,300 shekels for the court filing fee, plus interest, and approximately 20,000 shekels in attorney's fees, plus VAT. Separately, the court ordered him to pay 10,000 shekels to the state treasury. All amounts must be paid within 30 days.
