Haifa Court Extends for the Sixth Time the Detention of Man Suspected of Murdering His Wife

The Haifa Magistrate’s Court extended by five additional days the detention of Ali Maswada, 28, who is suspected of murdering his wife, Yanina Rusinova. The judge noted that the suspect’s account, according to which the deceased harmed herself, is inconsistent with the evidence presented, and that the suspicion is substantiated to a high degree.

What Happened

According to the police, Yanina Rusinova, 31, who was also known as Yonit Maswada, sustained fatal injuries in the couple’s apartment on Derech Ha’atzmaut Street in Haifa. Their two-month-old son, Farid, was in the apartment. The woman was taken to Rambam Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead following resuscitation efforts.

The Parties’ Positions

Ali Maswada claims that the deceased harmed herself. Attorney Leonid Prakhovnik, who represented him on behalf of the Public Defender’s Office, asked the police representative whether it was possible that the woman had died by suicide, but the officer rejected this account. The investigation is being conducted by the Haifa Police Station.

Why the Detention Was Extended

Judge Pikus Bogdanov ruled that the self-harm account was inconsistent with the evidence presented to her and assessed that the suspicion was substantiated to a high degree. Previously, five other judges who considered requests to extend the detention also found that reasonable suspicion existed; several of them noted new materials and a significant strengthening of the suspicions. The detention extension is a procedural measure and does not constitute a finding that Maswada is guilty.

What Happens Next

The court extended the detention by five additional days. According to the report, Maswada must be brought before a judge again next Monday if the police do not release him beforehand. The case number and information regarding the filing of an indictment were not specified in the original source.

What this means for you

In Israel, a suspect’s detention during the investigative stage may be extended repeatedly by court order if the investigative materials establish reasonable suspicion and the need to continue holding the suspect in detention. However, each extension requires a new judicial hearing, and detention itself is not a substitute for a conviction and does not determine a person’s guilt.
