Family of Child Injured at Hotel Awaits Prosecutor’s Office Decision

What Happened at the Hotel

Yair and Heli Sapir arrived in Eilat for a vacation with their three children. While the family was in the hotel lobby, Guy touched a railing, was electrocuted and lost consciousness. After resuscitation efforts, he was first taken to Yoseftal Hospital and then airlifted by helicopter to Soroka Hospital in Be’er Sheva.

The Child’s Condition

Following the incident, Guy was diagnosed with a severe brain injury; his condition was initially defined as vegetative. Later, according to his mother, after a reassessment, doctors determined that he was in a state of diminished consciousness. His parents chose home hospitalization, care for their son around the clock and, as a result, left their jobs.

The Family’s Claims Regarding the Investigation

According to the parents, the police investigation was completed as early as January–February, but ten months after the incident, no decision has yet been made in the case. The father points to security camera footage and a report by the National Center of Forensic Medicine, which he says determined that the injury was caused by electric current. The family is demanding an official determination of the circumstances of the incident and the identities of those responsible for it.

Response of the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office

The police stated that the investigation was opened immediately upon receipt of the report, the scene was closed off, and professionals, including an electrical expert, were brought in to examine it. After the investigative actions were completed, the materials were transferred to the Prosecutor’s Office, which is authorized to decide whether to file an indictment. The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the case is under review and that no decision has yet been made, noting the exceptional workload and the volume and complexity of the cases received; it did not disclose the content of the evidence.
