The Beersheba Magistrate’s Court sentenced Ram Shein to seven years in prison for stealing two sound systems from the Nova festival grounds near Re’im. Daniel Hasson, who attempted to sell the stolen equipment, valued at approximately 800,000 shekels, was sentenced to 40 months in prison.

Key facts

  • •Court: Beersheba Magistrate’s Court
  • •Ram Shein: seven years in prison
  • •Daniel Hasson: 40 months in prison
  • •Value of the equipment: approximately 800,000 shekels
  • •Date of the theft: two days after October 7, 2023
  • •The case number and sentencing date are not specified in the source

How the Equipment Was Stolen

The equipment belonged to Sound Fanatic, a company owned by Matan Lior and Amitai Rahum. Matan Lior was murdered at the festival after assisting, under fire, in evacuating casualties and rescuing people. Two days after the October 7, 2023 attack, Shein and Hasson arrived at the festival site. After falsely claiming that they intended to collect property belonging to a company owned by a missing person, they were allowed to enter the area.

What They Were Convicted Of

The court found that Shein was the principal initiator and driving force behind the offense, and that he also misled police investigators. After examining the evidence, he was convicted of theft and obtaining something by deceit under aggravated circumstances. According to the source, Hasson attempted to sell the stolen property.

The Sentences Imposed

Shein was sentenced to seven years in prison, a fine of 60,000 shekels, and a suspended prison sentence. In addition, he must pay 75,000 shekels to Matan Lior’s parents and 25,000 shekels to the deceased’s business partner. Hasson was sentenced to 40 months in prison, a fine of 30,000 shekels, compensation of 55,000 shekels, and a suspended prison sentence.

Why the Court Viewed the Offense as Especially Serious

Judge Amir Doron noted that the defendants exploited the chaos, grief, and helplessness at the site of the mass massacre for material gain. The court linked the severity of the acts not only to the violation of property rights, but also to the affront to the dignity of the dead and the sanctity of human life, social solidarity, trust in state institutions, and the rule of law. In the court’s view, the sentence should serve as an unequivocal deterrent message against looting the property of those killed during a national crisis.

What this means for you

The decision shows that stealing property at the site of a national disaster may lead to especially severe punishment: the court considers not only the value of the stolen property, but also the circumstances, the harm to the public, and the affront to the dignity of those killed. Alongside imprisonment, offenders may be subject to fines, compensation to victims, and suspended prison sentences.
